Bismarck Art & Galleries Association is a non-profit art gallery that is free and open to the public. Every month you’ll find a new exhibit filled with paintings, drawings, sculpture, or fiber arts, created by local, regional and national artists. A few times a year, group exhibits are installed where more than 70 artists may be represented at a time. The gallery is housed in a historic railroad warehouse in Bismarck’s beautiful downtown. Stop in to view art or shop the Gallery Store Tuesday through Friday 10 am to 5 pm or Saturdays 10 am to 1 pm. The gallery is closed Saturdays Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Step into our historic buildings and hear the stories of the people who moved here, built our towns and homesteaded the prairies of North Dakota. These are actual buildings dating from 1875 to 1935 and moved to this site by the Missouri Valley Historical Society for preservation.  They offer our visitors a feel for the atmosphere of the Missouri River Valley during the turn of the last century.  Buckstop Junction is supported by tours, membership, facility rentals, donations, sale from our vintage shop and our annual Corn Feed & Old Settler's Day.

A military installation established in 1872 to provide protection for work gangs building the Northern Pacific Railroad, it became a U.S. Weather Bureau station in 1894. A log headquarters building still stands on the site and serves as an interpretive museum for artifacts, with information about local history. The site is also home to a 1909 Northern Pacific locomotive and the 1881 Church of the Bread of Life, moved to the site in 1965. Admission is free. The western view from this site looks over great expanses of Missouri and Heart River bottomland and the opposing river bluffs. From this point 225 years ago, a person could see four or five Mandan earthlodge villages, homes to 6,000 or 7,000 people. The site has a self-guided tour, where visitors can see the depressions of a number of earth loges and a fortification ditch.

Located on the east bank of the Missouri River in Sertoma Park, North Dakota’s largest zoo is a 90 acre facility that is the home to 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish, representing 125 species, and visited by more than 150,000 people each year. Hop on board the Heringer Family Express and the Dakota Community Bank and Trust Express and take a 30-minute train ride through the Zoo to learn more about some of the furry and feathered friends you'll view.

Admission is $10 adults, $9 Seniors and $7 for children 2-12. Children under 2 are FREE.  Train rides are $5 per person.

Missouri River Road Trip description: Overlooking the Missouri River, this site contains the ruins of a large Mandan Indian earthlodge village inhabited from 1500 to 1780. The remains of earthlodges, refuse mounds, and surrounding fortification ditches, from which the site name is derived, are clearly visible. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On-site interpretation is open year-round. Admission is free.

Our mission at the Downtown Business Association is to serve and support the growth and development of downtown Bismarck to benefit our members and the entire community. We are a 501c6 non-profit organization that promotes our member businesses and the city center as the vital core of the community.  This idea is the cornerstone of all of the efforts of our organization.

The first "Thunderbird," a public art creation by the students of United Tribes Technical College is part of the Missouri Valley Legacy Center in Keelboat Park. You'll find the second in the series of eagle sculptures and interpretation just south of that, along River Road, in Bismarck's Sertoma Park, near the entrance of Dakota Zoo. This impressive display of four different eagles on a ceramic circle is something you don't want to miss on your visit to Bismarck-Mandan. The third sculpture, "Reflections," faces the Missouri River along River Road at Steamboat Park. The reflective sphere surrounded by an eagle represents Mother Earth and reflects the area's natural beauty. The fourth sculpture, “Rising Eagle,” is located in Pioneer Park and offers visitors a bench, within the sculpture, to rest and reflect. The fifth sculpture, “The Keeper,” is located near shelter number nine in Sertoma Park.
 

This historic site preserves the mid-Victorian mansion as a historic and architectural exhibit. Purchased for $5,000 from a Bismarck entrepreneur in 1893, the building served as the residence for 20 governors until 1960. Admission is free. Please visit our website for hours and more information.

History comes to life at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, 4480 Fort Lincoln Road, Mandan.
 
Rich in both military and early Native American history, Fort Abraham Lincoln was once an important infantry and cavalry post. It was from this fort that Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry rode out on their ill-fated expedition against the Sioux at the Little Big Horn. So, take a trip back to 1875 where the General's staff still entertains guests with stories of Libby, the General, and the time they spent in Dakota Territory. Portions of the military post, including the Custer House, have been reconstructed.
 
Popular with visitors is On-A-Slant Indian Village. Six reconstructed earth lodges depict the lifestyle of the Mandan Indians, who occupied this site from about 1575-1781. The park's Visitor Center houses the nation's best display of Mandan artifacts and history, along with items of interest on Lewis and Clark and General Custer.
 
The hills above Fort Abraham Lincoln provide a great view of the Missouri River valley with three reconstructed blockhouses standing guard over both the fort and the village.
 
A 97-unit modern campground and comfort station is located in a scenic wooded area adjacent to the Heart and Missouri River with picnic sites and playground equipment. Multi-use trails will take you along the sloping hills, open prairie and into the woods. Visitors will be treated to a panoramic view of the Missouri River valley from the park's nature and historic trails. The park also has 2 cabins and 4 primitive campsites with horse corrals.
 
Guided tours run May into September; cost is $8 per adult, $5 per student. The park is open all year round. Park entrance fees are $7 per vehicle, $35 for an annual single vehicle entrance permit and $55 for an annual family entrance permit (members of the same household get two annual permits).

Cruise the fabulous Missouri River aboard the Lewis and Clark, a 150-passenger riverboat. This all-weather paddlewheeler has excursion cruises, dinner cruises, moonlight cruises, pizza cruises, taco bar cruise, bbq picnic cruise and family cruises are all available for your enjoyment mid-June through Labor Day. We are a kayak rental company that all but lives on the Missouri River. You can rent our kayaks for your own adventures or have one of our guides take you any month of the year. These adventures reveal the fun and often wild secrets the Missouri River’s hiding. Not only do we rent up and down the Missouri River from Hoge Island to Kimball Bottoms, we also have a physical location at Dockside in Lakewood Marina in Mandan. Here, you can safely paddle around the bay on a kayak or paddleboard.

Visitors to the North Dakota State Capitol grounds find a unique blend of the state’s past, present, and future. The State Capitol building, also known as the “Skyscraper on the Prairie,” stands proudly over the heart of Bismarck. The Capitol grounds arboretum trail winds behind the Governor’s residence and along the Capitol building, highway building, Liberty Memorial building, the Heritage Center, and the Veteran’s Memorial. Approximately 75 species of trees, shrubs, and blooming flowers are identified. Also on the grounds are statues of Sakakawea, the Pioneer family, Former Governor Burke, a buffalo, and an Arabian horse. Admission is free.
