Bismarck-Mandan Convention & Visitors Bureau Commissions 2021 Bismarck-Mandan Arts & Culture Map

The Bismarck-Mandan Convention & Visitors Bureau (BMCVB) has commissioned a 2021 Bismarck-Mandan Arts and Culture Map. The BMCVB has been working to spotlight local artisans in the Visitor Information Center’s Genuine Dakota Gift Shop (located at 1600 Burnt Boat Drive, Bismarck) and through that, the idea to have a local artist collaborate with the BMCVB to create a map, highlighting the area’s arts & culture sites, came to be. The goal is to raise awareness of the vast number of arts and culture offerings in and around Bismarck-Mandan and to remind the community of, and expose visitors to, those amazing locations.

The hope is to have a new map each year, working with a different artist. Depending on how things develop, there may be a different theme and execution every year.

Sheri Grossman, BMCVB CEO, said, “We are excited to debut the Bismarck-Mandan Arts and Culture Map. This is an inspiring way to raise awareness of the arts and culture offerings in our community and help exemplify them to visitors. By offering a new one each year, we hope that by creating a series, we can showcase the talent of many of our local artists to be cherished for years to come.”

In addition to the arts and culture locations, the map also features some of the area’s favorite attractions and landmarks, as well as shows fun depictions of the abundant opportunities for biking, fishing, kayaking and canoeing.

The map was designed and painted by local artist, Nicole Gagner, known for her large outdoor mural, Grandma's Pickles, in downtown Bismarck's art Alley 5.5. She works as a teaching artist with a wide variety of students of all ages and abilities, from the very young to elders in care facilities, and all in between.

Camie Lies, BMCVB Director of Marketing & Communications, said, “We have so many amazing locations for people to enjoy, we thought that this was a fun and whimsical way to portray them. Most of the locations have posted our flyer with the information on it, to let people know where they can learn more.”

Lies added, “Nicole was so fun to work with; her creativity is endless. We gave her the nuts and bolts of some ‘must’ locations and she came up with the rest, incorporating some really imaginative drawings to portray those locations.”

Along with 18” x 24” posters, other items have been created to be sold, for a limited time, in the Visitor Information Center’s Genuine Dakota Gift Shop. Framed posters, youth-adult shirts, two sizes of totes, aprons, tea towels, magnets, stickers and postcards are also available.
